I was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on October 10, 1953, and my mother still resides in the community and worships regularly at Maple Springs. Educated in the public schools of Forsyth County, I graduated from Wake Forest University in 1975 with a double major in history and religion. In 1978, I received the Master of Divinity degree from the Divinity School of Duke University. In 1989, I earned a Ph.D. in Church History and Theology from Duke University. Prior to coming to Maple Springs in 2006, I served a variety of United Methodist churches in Kernersville, Lewisvillle, Cornelius, Mt. Airy, and Winston-Salem. In addition to serving as the Senior Pastor, I teach in the Wake Forest Divinity School and hold an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Methodist Studies.
